Our roots are firmly planted in Hackensack, in the heart of Bergen County, where our family name and reputation have been earned one roof, one customer, and one promise at a time. Our Story: Four Generations Rooted in Hackensack
The story of Hackensack Roofing Company dates back to 1928. The Garino family had planted the seed that would grow to deep roots in Hackensack, NJ. A mission molded by history that has survived the tests of time. From Alfonzo Garino’s early work during the difficult years of the Great Depression to Alfred R. Garino, Sr. founding a home improvement and roofing firm that would later become the Hackensack Roofing Company we know today. The business was built on a simple promise to provide quality workmanship that would lead to our tagline.
That promise has carried through generations. Even when the company’s leadership, Alfred R. Garino, Sr. and Raymond A. Garino, proudly served their country during World War II, their patriotism, discipline, and dedication to service became part of the company’s character and helped shape the way Hackensack Roofing Company continues to serve its customers and community today.
"Colonel Garino was highly decorated during the war. He received the Purple Heart when he was wounded in Germany, and the Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster and the Silver Star for valor. Among other decorations, he earned the European Theatre medal with three battle stars."
Al Sr. and Al Jr. visit Alfonzo’s Byrne Street home in the 1940s. This is a reflection of the strong family bond that shaped Hackensack Roofing Company. Those same values, passed down through generations, continue to guide the company’s commitment to dependable service and lasting relationships with clients today.
By 1945, the company established its first fixed location in Hackensack at 10 Johnson Ave.
In 1945, the Hackensack Roofing Company trade name was registered at the Bergen County Courthouse.
In the 1950s, Hackensack Roofing Company became known not only for dependable roofing work, but for a personal, down-to-earth approach. Alfred R. Garino, Sr.’s well-known maroon station wagon helped make a professional first impression with homeowners and reflected the company’s belief in honest conversations, approachable service, and no-obligation estimates.
By 1956, the Garino family’s growing business had outgrown its 10 Johnson Ave location, leading Alfred Garino, Sr. to build the company’s 811 Main St operation.
In 1958, local coverage recognized Hackensack Roofing Company for its excellent reputation, old-fashioned craftsmanship, and square dealing. The fleet of red trucks doubled in size in the 50's.

In 1962, Hackensack Roofing Company needed more space and moved to 83 First St.
A new red station wagon continued offering free estimates as the growing fleet of red trucks doubled once again alongside the business.
This promotional flyer from the 1970s reflects the continued success of Hackensack Roofing Company under dedicated family leadership. Alfred Sr., Alfred Jr., Raymond Sr., Raymond Jr., and Edwin Garino proudly worked together, building upon the strong foundation established over the decades.
The Johns Manville Certified stamp further highlights the company’s commitment to superior quality and trusted materials, a relationship and standard of excellence that continue to this day.
In 2018, Hackensack Roofing Company made its move to the current location, 67 Orchard St. Under the continued legacy of Alfred Garino III, Hackensack Roofing Company remains a family-owned business guided by the same values that shaped it more than 80 years ago: honest recommendations, quality service, reasonable pricing, and pride in protecting the homes and businesses of the community it has served for generations.
